Moon Hunters Issue 1 Page 9

So here we see Lyria’s dad for the first time. We also get a bit of interaction between Lyria and her parents.

One thing that bothered me after I wrote the first issue is that I worried that readers would think Lyria is the typical Disney Princess, and her parents were royalty. That doesn’t really exist for the River Folk. They aren’t a kingdom. There is no King.

They function more like a democracy or a tribal council type system where the elders of the land have a say in the government. Lyria’s father is on the council and her mother is one of the most decorated of the Moon Hunters. She handles training new would-be Moon Hunters and commands the defense of the realm from monsters.

From that perspective her family is important but they are far from being a King or Queen.

Artistically speaking, this scene is probably my least favorite in the book. I do think there is a lot that comes across here with the story and her dad’s mustache is legendary, but it’s probably my least favorite drawing wise.

Moon Hunters: Tales of the River Folk is a fantasy comic written and illustrated by Matthew Childers. It tells the story of a young headstrong Hornling girl named Lyria, whose misadventures put her people in grave peril and her quest to right her wrongs and protect her fellow River Folk.
